What Does an EV Conversion of a Classic Car Cost?

If you’re considering an EV conversion for a classic car, one of the first questions that naturally comes to mind is: how much does it cost? The answer is that every project is unique. The cost of a classic car electric conversion depends on the vehicle itself, its condition, and what you want it to become. From sympathetic upgrades that retain original character, through to high-performance electric builds, there is a wide spectrum of possibilities and costs to match.

At Retroelectric, we take a technology-agnostic approach to every electric classic car conversion. That means we don’t rely on a single off-the-shelf system. Instead, we select the most suitable electric motor, battery pack, and supporting components for each individual car.

For some customers, the priority is a smooth, refined driving experience that enhances usability while preserving the essence of the vehicle. For others, it’s about accessing modern performance, increased range, and, importantly, everyday reliability. These differing goals naturally influence the overall EV conversion cost.

Typical electric classic car conversion costs

As a general guide, classic car EV conversions in the UK typically start from around £30,000. At this level, you’re looking at a lower-power system suited to smaller, lighter vehicles. Eamples of this would be the ever-popular Volkswagen Beetle. This type of electric car conversion transforms the driving experience, delivering quiet, smooth, and dependable performance while maintaining the charm of the original car.

For larger, heavier or more demanding vehicles, the cost increases accordingly. A Land Rover electric conversion, for example, will typically start from around £45,000+. These builds require more torque, stronger drivetrain integration, and often a larger or more robust battery system to suit both the weight of the vehicle and how it will be used.

At the higher end of the scale, more complex builds can reach significantly higher investment levels. We are currently working on a Bentley S3 electric conversion project, where the EV system is in the region of £80,000. In this case, the brief includes a much more powerful motor and an extended driving range, requiring the largest battery pack we have installed, and more advanced engineering integration. Projects like this are about delivering effortless, modern performance while preserving the luxury and presence of the classic Bentley experience.

It’s also important to understand that the cost of converting a classic car to electric often extends beyond the drivetrain itself. Many vehicles we work on benefit from additional restoration or upgrade work. This can include suspension improvements, brake upgrades, steering enhancements, and cosmetic elements such as paintwork and interior refurbishment.

As a full-service specialist, we can carry out all of these elements in-house, ensuring the car not only drives exceptionally but looks and feels as it should. These factors will all influence the overall project cost, depending on the level of work required.

Ultimately, a classic EV conversion is an investment in the future usability of your car. It allows you to retain the design, heritage, and emotional connection of a classic vehicle, while benefiting from the reliability, drivability, and efficiency of modern electric power. For many owners, it transforms a car that was occasionally used into one that can be enjoyed far more often and with complete confidence.
